The Magic Of Nature Based Practices & Living In The Dirt

Updated: Jul 11

Nature based practices, rituals and ceremonies have simply been a part of the human experience since the beginning of time. This makes sense since we are animals living here on planet earth. Throughout history we have celebrated and reveled in our interconnection with mother earth and all her miraculous flora and fauna.

On the other hand, we have also adopted many belief systems, mindsets and other structures that separate us from nature, villainize her and encourage us to be living against her in various ways. I'm not going to get into the reasons why here, we know them all too well and our history lays it out plainly. These shifts have resulted in environmental destruction...as well as sickness for all life on the planet including humans.

Our interconnectedness with all is evident every day if we look for it, there is great capacity to shift in a direction of love, connection and harmony and we also live this and see it all the time.

The actual frequency of the earth, like a mother's heartbeat to a child in the womb, is resonant for us, it will bring us back into balance, a place that feels calm, comfortable and safe. She is a source of health for us and we for her. What do I mean by the earth frequency and how do we do this? If you are feeling anxious, depressed or depleted and you take a long walk on the beach with your feet in the sand or spend a few hours gardening with your hands in the dirt, that direct contact with earth will balance quite a bit in your system. You will feel different and better. We all know this, but sometimes there is a lot of static, it is a good reminder that finding our way back to center is and can be simple.

Over time I have come to commune with the land I live on, the elements, all of the wild animals around me, the ground, sky, stars, sun and moon...these are rich relationships and I am always learning a lot. The clouds in the sky will shift into a baby dragon or a horse jumping over a heart when I ask for guidance, animals are constantly getting my attention-a pair of bald eagles looks down at me from the tallest tree and then again there is one later, gazing at me in the park-they are rare and their message is strong. A little rabbit hops up to me while I am meditating and then a three deer cross my path. My experience of all of this crosses between "non ordinary" reality and this "3D" reality as well. I have dreams living underwater or our on a distant planet while speaking with people I haven't met yet or last connected to a hundred years ago.

I have full moon rituals and new moon rituals and ceremonies for snakes and termites...for wasps, elementals, trees, flowers, cousins, and ancestors. All of it is not so serious but also true and authentic and powerful. My intuition is connected with the environment and all beings because of a felt and lived experience that we are not separate and we depend on each other.

Rituals and ceremonies allow me to be connected to my spirit and the spirit around me, it allows the experience here to be miraculous every day...a couple of days ago a dragon fly eating a ladybug landed at the end of a strand of my hair while I was gardening. While that could be seen as creepy or startling by some, it was immediately honoring and meaningful, I felt the meaning of internalizing blessings and taking action, the communication from brother dragonfly. I feel grounded in this life experience and in the spiritual world at the same time and there is nothing more valuable.

I am likely speaking to the choir but I am glad of that. We still live in a culture where this way of living and experiencing life is not the norm and it is not necessarily celebrated or encouraged...but over the years, more and more people have contacted me to share about how they see fairies and talk to their trees. They have spoken about experiencing portals in the earth, receiving important messages from bears, crows, foxes and rocks...travelling to other places in nature in their meditations, and so much more! We can always find the way back to center and connection, to our purpose and authenticity. We are all a part of the whole and it is beautiful.
